Our duty to the planet
I’m thrilled to announce that Frameology has joined 1% For The Planet, an organization with a simple idea: because companies profit from the resources they take from the Earth, they should help protect those resources.
Our membership means that, from this day forward, 1% of every Frameology purchase will be donated to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment.
Why?
Climate change is one of the most important issues we face. We recognize that every industry, including ours, imposes a cost on the environment. We believe that solving climate change will require everyone to do whatever they can with the means available.
Most of the framed photos around my apartment are of nature. Frameology initially came to be because I wanted to frame a photo of my girlfriend (now wife!) and me in Big Sur. Despite being a city kid from New York, I’m in love with the outdoors.
Incorporating an environmental mission was something we have always wanted to do at Frameology. But as a bootstrapped startup, we needed to reinvest all of our profits into the business to survive and grow. We have always used sustainably harvested materials and, whenever possible, recycled materials. But we never felt like we had the resources to make a larger commitment. Two things have changed this:
First, I moved to San Francisco in January, where I have received a first hand glimpse of what climate change will mean for billions of people. You have probably seen the news in recent weeks about the fires burning in California. Well, a few weeks ago, I woke up to this view:

I knew intellectually that the fires were among the worst ever and that the trend was toward it getting worse in the future. But the post-apocalyptic scene layered an emotional urgency on top of all the statistics. I asked myself, “If not now, then when?”
Second, Frameology has grown because our incredible customers have continued to support us. They have referred their friends, shared on social media, and have come back again and again to frame the moments that matter. Then, with the outbreak of COVID, even more people began framing with us, many using Frameology to connect with friends and family in a way that digital media wouldn’t allow. It is entirely our customers who have put us in the position to do more.
How?
Our customers will have the power to decide who we support through the 1% For The Planet program. Here’s how it will work:
- Each year, our employees will do the work to research and nominate five nonprofits that we think will have the greatest impact.
- In January, every person who framed with us during the previous year will receive an email with the opportunity to vote on these nonprofits.
- The nonprofit with the most votes will receive 1% of our sales.
Closing thoughts
Climate change is one of those things where we are truly all in this together. Our mission over the coming years is to be the most environmentally friendly framing company in the world. We are thrilled to be taking the first step with 1% For The Planet. There will be more to come.
